CAIR-New Jersey Welcomes Hate Crime Investigation in East Brunswick High School Attack

(SOUTH PLAINFIELD, N.J., 4/12/2019) – The New Jersey chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-New Jersey) today welcomed hate a crime investigation against a female high school student who was engaged in a fight with a female Muslim student on school grounds on Wednesday.  In the course of the alteration the Muslim student’s hijab, or headscarf was torn off and the other student hurled racist slurs.

The incident reportedly began as a dispute over seating and escalated to a violent altercation that was video taped. Both students were suspended as a result of the alteration as is school policy.  Following the incident, the other student posted on Snap Chat calling the Muslim Student a “Raghead.” The other student has been charged with simple assault, harassment, cyber-harassment and disorderly conduct.

“Students in this state have a right to safety and security while on school premises, and it is the duty of faculty and administrators to ensure that right,” said CAIR New Jersey Executive Director, Jim Sues. “Bias incidents, violence, and cyber bulling such as was witnessed in this case should never be tolerated, and the laws that protect our citizens from these offenses should be strictly enforced.”

Sues also noted that CAIR New Jersey has offered Anti-Bullying workshops to the local Muslim community and has offered cultural sensitivity training to the East Brunswick school system.

He added that CAIR has reported an unprecedented spike in bigotry targeting American Muslims and members of other minority groups since the election of Donald Trump as president.

In a published report, CAIR noted a 17 percent increase in bias-motivated incidents and a 15 percent increase in hate crimes against American Muslims since Trump took office.
