The congressman posted a dominant showing with over 80% of the vote according to unofficial tallies. Facing two opponents including Oakley, who raised significant dollars, Payne built a coalition that bridged all facets of the Democratic Party and energized voters throughout Essex, Hudson and Union counties with his positive message of progressive, effective leadership and his focus on direct voter contact.
“This is a victory for the hardworking men and women of the 10th District who showed that they demand experienced, effective leadership that puts their needs first and always shows up for them, and that’s exactly what I have always strived to deliver as their Congressman,” said Congressman Payne. “I would like to thank our incredible supporters for working so hard to make this victory possible, from the many labor unions and progressive organizations that endorsed, to the elected officials and community leaders that engaged with their residents. More than anything I want to thank the everyday folks who continue to put their trust and faith in me to represent them in our nation’s capital. Democracy is about choices and 10th District Democrats made their voices heard loud and clear today, and I thank them from the bottom of my heart.”
“Congressman Payne has proven once again today that he has the support and confidence of the residents of the 10th District, because he does the work every day and always delivers for them,” said Payne Senior Advisor Rasheida Smith. “Donald Payne, Jr., has built on the wonderful legacy his father created and has charted his own course by getting the job done for the working families of Essex, Hudson and Union counties. Congressman Payne looks forward to continuing to serve the communities of the 10th District for many years to come, thanks to the incredibly strong support of the people he has the honor of representing.”
