1981 and 2017: Democratic Gubernatorial Primaries By the Numbers
Democratic Insiders are marveling at the party turnout in yesterday’s election, which is hovering around the 500,000 mark.
One must go back to 1981 to find better Democratic Primary turnout numbers.
That was James Florio versus the late Robert Roe and a big field of contenders, and together they amassed 633,282 votes.
Here are the other turnout figures from New Jersey gubernatorial Democratic primaries:
1985: 326,403 (the Peter Shapiro primary)
1989: 369,323 (Florio/Boggs Sigmund, Karcher)
1993: 200K (Florio uncontested)
1997: 372k (McGreevey, Rob Andrews, Mike Murphy)
2001: 262K
2005: 236K (Corzine)
2009: 200K (Corzine, uncontested)
2013: 200K (Buono, uncontested)
