AG’s Office Investigates Fatal Officer Shooting in Newark

The Attorney General’s Office is conducting an investigation of a fatal officer-involved shooting involving the Newark Police Department that occurred just after midnight this morning in the area of South 11th Street and Woodland Avenue in Newark, according to the state AG’s Office.
One male civilian, age 39, sustained fatal injuries.  The name of the decedent is not being released at this time.
The AG is conducting the investigation into the fatal shooting pursuant to a law enacted in January 2019, P.L.2019, c.1, which requires that the Attorney General’s Office conduct investigations of a person’s death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in the officer’s official capacity or while the decedent is in custody.
The investigation is ongoing and no further information is being released at this time, according to the state AG’s Office.
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka issued the following statement:

“Just a few minutes into the New Year, some of our plainclothes Newark police officers arrived at a scene where shots were being fired and an officer fired one round fatally striking someone.

“The Attorney General’s office is leading an investigation and the officer is on administrative leave while the investigation is underway. Two firearms were also recovered and at least one arrest was made.
