All Eyes on the Kelly Campaign’s First Submitted Fundraising Report
Money, how’s it gathered, how’s it spent, and how it’s reported is a particularly critical issue for Newark’s West Ward, where – until yesterday – Dupre “DoItAll” Kelly had not filed an itemized accounting of his finances with the state Election Law Enforcement Commission (ELEC).
The Kelly Campaign yesterday finally filed a report – its first, after having missed at least two two other deadlines – and leaving those in and around the race wondering about his hauls and campaign spending habits.
The 29-day report will be available on the April 19th disclosure, according to ELEC.
Of course, the burning question now is: what’s in that report, according to inquiring minds close to the election. Mayor Ras Baraka picked Kelly in part because the Lords of the Underground star presumably has considerable fundraising contacts.
Indeed, the Kelly Campaign publicized several major fundraising events, and unlike other Team Baraka allies, Kelly filed a single candidate committee report with ELEC. Again, until yesterday, the candidate – running to fill a vacancy caused by the resignation of West Ward Councilman Joe McCallum – had not filed an ELEC report itemizing money raised and spent.
A source told InsiderNJ that Team Baraka last week banged on the door, wanted some answers from Kelly about money, and made sure his campaign was going to be ELEC compliant.
The Kelly Campaign promised they would get the report in by the Monday deadline, and they did.
The candidate could not be reached yesterday or today for comment about the contents of his report, as the race in one of the most competitive wards in Newark’s May 10th contest intensifies.
Kelly has the attention of a large field of contenders by virtue of his association with the mayor and his own organizing and, yes, presumed fundraising skills.
But what, exactly, has he raised?
Stay tuned.
