Amy Kennedy Statement Following Polls Closing in South Jersey

I never imagined that we’d be spending Election Night socially distant and facing a global pandemic that has impacted not just our community and our country, but the entire world. And I never imagined that I’d be speaking to you virtually tonight.

With dedication, commitment and sacrifice, we have made it through an unprecedented and extraordinary election season and it’s no surprise that tonight is a bit different as well.

As you all know, the polls closed almost two hours ago, and ballots are still being counted.  I have said from the beginning of this campaign that it is important that every vote be counted and every voice heard and as we expected, it looks like that process will continue beyond tonight.

It was nearly one year ago when Jeff Van Drew abandoned the people of South Jersey and pledged his undying support to Donald Trump. It was then that I knew I had to step up and do something. And tonight, after months and months of South Jersey waiting for economic relief and strong leadership that hasn’t come, I know I made the right decision.

I am incredibly proud of the campaign that we have run.  We listened and we learned. We united people, not divided them.  We stood up and spoke out instead of sitting back in silence.  We stayed true to our values and we ran a campaign focused on service and putting forth real plans and solutions that will make a better South Jersey for everyone.

I’ve had the honor of working with some of the most dedicated people I know, who shared in my vision for change and joined our fight. From my tireless and amazing staff who put in countless hours, to my unwavering and unrelenting volunteers who made thousands of calls. I’m so grateful to them, to my family and friends and to everyone who has supported our campaign with their time, their money or their vote. We would not be where we are today without you.  Thank you all for your hard work and for continuing in this fight with me.

We deserve a leader who will fight for better paying jobs, for the protection our workers need, for relief for small businesses, and for access to affordable health care.  The people of South Jersey have been left behind and abandoned by our Congressman for too long.  I’m hopeful that South Jersey will get the representation it deserves.

Thank you all!
