Arkansas Arrives in New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District

Turns out New Jersey Democrats think Jay Webber would be a fine congressman.

In Arkansas.

That’s right. The state Democratic Committee this week sent out a mailer suggesting that Webber’s conservative views don’t mesh with New Jersey’s 11th congressional district.

“Out of whack Webber is wrong for New Jersey,” the mailer says, noting the Republican’s views on abortion, guns and gay marriage.

It said those views are better suited for Arkansas, and just to make sure everyone got the point, the mailer included a road sign greeting people to the state along with pictures of a barn and a beat-up old car.

The mailer prompted howls of indignation from the Webber camp and even the National Republican Congressional Committee. Both suggested this was Democratic candidate Mikie Sherrill’s “deplorables” moment, comparing the mailer to Hillary Clinton’s infamous comment about Trump supporters.

How dare Democrats and Sherrill insult an entire state, they said.

In truth, it is often counterproductive to make a political point in one state by demeaning another. You also wonder why Arkansas was selected. The great state of Mississippi is a more usual target for this type of stuff.

While the Sherrill campaign didn’t respond to a question about the mailer, there is a Webber-Arkansas connection. The assemblyman is friends with Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton, which may help explain things.

Condemnation from the Republicans aside, this type of campaigning is done by both sides. It’s not all that unusual for a conservative running in the Midwest or South to say their Democratic opponent would be better suited to represent New York City or San Francisco.

This kind of regional politics may be silly, but let’s be real, it’s not scandalous.

Of course in this case, one presumes we can probably forget about Bill Clinton coming into the district to campaign for Sherrill.
