Assembly Speaker Craig J. Coughlin (D-Middlesex) today announced new leadership appointments. The changes strengthen the Assembly’s ability to address key issues, support legislative initiatives, and advance the Democratic Majority’s agenda.

“Each of the leaders being named today brings expertise, passion and strategic vision to their new roles,” said Speaker Coughlin. “I am grateful for the work they have done, and look forward to their further contributions in the Assembly. Together, we will work to advance legislation on issues including affordability, economic security, public safety, and improvements to health and education.”

Assemblywoman Annette Quijano (D-Union), who previously served as Majority Conference Leader, has been nominated to the role of Speaker Pro Tempore, replacing Senator-Select Benjie E. Wimberly. Assembly members will vote on the nomination during the January 30th voting session.

Assemblywoman Linda S. Carter (D-Somerset, Union) has been promoted to the Majority Conference Leader role, joining the senior leadership team of the Assembly.

Speaker Coughlin has also named Assemblywomen Shama Haider (D-Bergen) and Tennille R. McCoy (D-Mercer, Middlesex) as Deputy Conference Leaders.

Two members of the Assembly leadership team have been asked to chair committees in a temporary capacity for the remainder of the current legislative session. Assemblywoman Carol Murphy (D-Burlington) will lead the Assembly Health Committee and Assemblywoman Verlina Reynolds-Jackson (D-Hunterdon, Mercer) will chair the Assembly Education Committee. Assemblywoman Murphy will
continue to serve as Majority Whip and Assemblywoman Reynolds-Jackson as Constituent Outreach Chair.
