Assembly Whip: Herb Out, Raj In

Herb out, Raj in.

LD33 Assemblyman Raj Mukherji will join the Assembly Democratic leadership team as the Majority Whip, replacing LD8 Assemblyman Herb Conaway.

Mukherji’s elevation to the Assembly leadership can be seen as another example of the growing political primacy by the South Asian community today, coupled with the swearing-in of Senator Vin Gopal this afternoon.

Shavonda Sumter and Jerry Green will remain as Conference Leader and Speaker Pro Tempore, respectively, and Lou Greenwald as Majority Leader, while the position of Deputy Majority Whip – previously held by Essex’s Ralph Caputo – has been given to LD18’s Robert Karabinchak.

There’s already committee shakeups occurring, such as Bergen’s Vainieri Huttle being replaced as Human Services Chair, as reported by Insider NJ.  However, she’ll take over the Assembly Homeland Security Committee.  Assemblymen Eustace of Bergen and Wimberly of Paterson also lost their committee chairmanships.  See the full list here.
