Baraka Backs Silva in East Ward Runoff Election

“Mike will put fairness and justice first on behalf of East Ward families”

Newark NJ, June 8, 2022

In a prepared statement released today, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka announced his endorsement of Michael Silva, candidate for Newark City Council, representing the East Ward.

“Mike Silva cares deeply about the East Ward. As a community service detective for the last 18 years, he’s gotten to know every neighborhood well and worked closely with the East Ward’s community leaders. I need Mike’s energy, smarts, and discipline working with me in City Hall to keep improving Newark’s quality of life.

“Most importantly, Mike will put fairness and justice first on behalf of East Ward families. I know every East Ward resident, regardless of neighborhood, will feel they have a leader on the City Council who will listen to their concerns and do his best for them.

“I urge every voter in the East Ward to cast their vote for Michael Silva.”

The election will be held on Tuesday, June 14, 2022.

Mike Silva stated, “I am honored to have the support of Mayor Baraka in this run-off election. I know that while we may not always agree on everything, that we will find a way to work together to improve the lives of the citizens of the East Ward, and keep moving the City Forward.”

The runoff features a showdown between Silva and former Newark Police Director Anthony Campos.

Baraka backed retired policeman Louis Weber in the May election, a four-man contest that only Silva and Campos survived.

To date, Silva has collected significant political establishment backing, including the support of North Ward Councilman Anibal Ramos, the LD29 legislative team, Sheriff Armando Fontoura, and now the mayor.
