Biden Victory Prompts New Jerseyans to Take to the Streets
BEDMINSTER – The last stand for the Trumpsters?
Maybe, maybe not.
An hour or so after the race was called for Joe Biden, a hundred or so loyal Donald Trump supporters gathered outside the town library – and just a few miles down the road from the president’s golf course – for what had become a campaign staple: a flag-waving rally.
“Trump 2020, Trump 2020,” a woman yelled through a bullhorn at the crowd and at passing traffic on Route 206.
Did they miss the news?
Of course not.
They just refused to believe it.
There were complaints about a “corrupt system” and disgust that the media had called the election.
Didn’t it call Florida for Al Gore all those years ago, said one man.
How about military ballots, asked another.
Music – generally from the 1960s and 70’s – is common at Trump rallies and today’s was no exception. But there also was an original campaign song about “getting on-board the Trump train.”
It was not surprising that when a woman in a car stopped at a red light defiantly waved a “Biden-Harris” sign at the Trump group, many in the crowd responded with obscenities.
So what does this mean going forward?
Or, how long will Trump’s most ardent supporters refuse to accept reality? A lot depends on what Trump himself does.
A very different kind of rally ensued this morning in Teaneck.
Organized by left-wing groups, it was called to demand that all votes be counted.
But after Biden was declared the winner, the rally was more of a street party.
“We deserve this joy, we’re going to celebrate,” said Arati Kreibich, who challenged Josh Gottheimer from the left in this year’s primary.
Other speakers struck a similar tone and also ridiculed Trump’s claims of fraud.
“Have you heard of any evidence of ballots falling from the sky?” asked Tony Schwab. Counting ballots, he said, is as non-controversial as “1,2, 3.”
But the party also included a look ahead. A few speakers mentioned the need for New Jersey Dems to do what they can to support a Georgia runoff in January that will determine control of the Senate. Two seats in the Senate will be decided. The GOP now has a 50-48 lead, but if Dems win two and make it 50-50, they will have control because the tie-breaking vote will be Kamala Harris, the vice president to be.
There were Biden-Harris signs, of course, and some held them aloft to traffic. In liberal-leaning Teaneck, there were many beeping horns and shouts of support.
The theme on this beautiful, November day was easy to see.
The election is over, but the political divide continues across the nation and on the streets of the Garden State.
The real question is, will they invoke the 25th Amendment before or after the the inaugural parade?
