Biden Wants to Boldly Go Where Booker has Gone Before
Only US citizens can lawfully vote, but Democratic candidate Joe Biden is hoping for some support that is out of this world. New Jersey’s US Senator Cory Booker will be beaming up with other former presidential candidates Pete Buttigieg and Andrew Yang along with past Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams—all Trekkies—as special guests to “Trek The Vote.” They will appear alongside various “Star Trek” series cast members supporting Joe Biden’s bid for the presidency.
The Biden Victory Fund hopes to benefit from a “virtual convention” where Biden’s political supporters will lend their voices, alongside actors Alison Pill, Anthony Rapp, Brent Spiner, Evan Evagora, Gates McFadden, George Takei, Isa Briones, Jeri Ryan, Jonathan Del Arco, Jonathan Frakes, Kate Mulgrew, LeVar Burton, Marina Sirtis, Michelle Hurd, Sir Patrick Stewart, Santiago Cabrera, Sonequa Martin-Greene, Wil Wheaton, and Wilson Cruz.
Takei, who played Hikaru Sulu in the original series, has long been an opponent of President Trump, blasting the president on a variety of issues, particularly on human rights abuses with respect to migrants. Takei and his family were forced into Japanese internment camps in 1942 during the Second World War, a subject he highlights in his recent book, “They Called Us Enemy.”
Wil Wheaton has been a vocal opponent of Trump and urged voters to cast their ballots. Two weeks ago, he said, “This year, Democracy itself is on the ballot. Please, do not let this be our last election with any remnant of ‘free and fair’ left in it.”
In 2019, Booker appeared at the San Diego Comic Con and said that when he was a child his father told him “this is a show you must watch.” “It was already apparent to him,” Booker told SyFy Wire, “how it was impacting culture and for me as a guy growing up black and seeing a future where we have overcome racism and poverty and all those challenges. But more than that, we as a species—humanity—pulled together doing things beyond imagination. And what was exciting in my generation was to grow up and see things on Star Trek, and then see technology catch up…. As a young kid [Star Trek] challenged me to dream bolder dreams.” Booker was also recognized the fact that the first Star Trek convention was held at the Newark Public Library in 1969. “I’m very proud that my city can claim that we are the birthplace of Star Trek conventions.”
President Donald Trump authorized the creation of the sixth branch of the US military, the Space Force, which came into being on December 19, 2019, headquartered at the Pentagon. Popular culture fans have noted that the Space Force’s delta shaped insignia bears a striking resemblance to the delta worn on the chest of Captain James T. Kirk who boldly went where no man had gone before. However, the Space Force’s design is not a direct lift from the aesthetics of the fictional USS Enterprise but is derivative from the US Air Force Space Command badge.
While the future envisioned by Gene Roddenberry did not have currency as we know it, the Biden campaign hopes that Trek fans will join on October 13 at 6pm, participating in a Q&A, panel discussions, games, and will reach into their pockets and help his electoral chances in November.
