BUDGET IMPASSE: Pintor Marin Pushes Back Against Murphy
TRENTON – Assemblywoman Eliana Pinor Marin (D-29), chair of the Assembly Budget Committee, pushed back against Governor Phil Murphy as the state edges closer to a state government shutdown.
“We have come up with a reasonable and responsible budget,” Pintor Marin said. “It includes anywhere from 90 to 95 percent of what he wants.”
InsiderNJ wanted to know why the other five to ten percent of what Murphy wants is unreasonable.
“We just can’t afford to do everything,” said the Budget Chair. “So 90-95 is a good number.”
A Murphy ally griped, “Does Eliana realize the legislature is proposing far more spending than the Governor and that the issue now is how we fund these things? SMH.”
The source noted the Legislature’s desired addition of $150 million for Homestead rebates, about $200 million more for their spending priorities and $62 million more for school funding.
Assembly Democrats disappeared behind closed doors this afternoon to plot their next action.
Speaker Craig Coughlin (D-19) and Senate President Steve Sweeney (D-3) planned a 2:30 p.m. press conference to formally respond to Murphy.
