Chaneyfield Jenkins Running for Newark Central Ward Seat

Former Newark Central Ward Councilwoman Gayle Chaneyfield Jenkins officially announced her candidacy for the Central Ward seat on the Newark Municipal Council in the November 4, 2025, special election. With decades of public service and a proven track record of leadership, Chaneyfield Jenkins is stepping forward to address the pressing needs of Newark’s largest ward during this critical time.
“The Central Ward has been without representation for far too long,” said Chaneyfield Jenkins. “This is a pivotal moment for our community, and we need experienced, independent leadership to ensure that the voices of our residents are heard and their needs prioritized.”
The Central Ward seat has been vacant since September 2024 following LaMonica McIver’s resignation to serve in Congress. A recent ruling by State Superior Court Judge Robert Gardner determined that the seat will remain unfilled until the November general election, leaving residents without a voice on the council for over a year.
Community leaders have expressed strong support for Chaneyfield Jenkins’ candidacy, emphasizing her
experience and commitment to Newark residents. Reverend Joe A. Carter, Pastor of New Hope Baptist
Church, stated: “I wholeheartedly support the candidacy of Gayle Chaneyfield Jenkins for the vacant
Council seat in the Central Ward. Gayle’s leadership is key to the rebuilding of Newark. She is the leader
Newark needs in these challenging times.”
Bishop Jethro C. James, Pastor of Paradise Baptist Church and President of the North Jersey Black Churches Association, echoed similar sentiments: “Gayle’s candidacy comes as a response to the overwhelming outcry from residents who want an independent voice who will fight for them. She represents experience and commitment and will restore faith in our local government while implementing policies that improve the lives of Central Ward residents and city employees.”
District leaders have also voiced their support. Denise Davis, District Leader of Central 15, said: “At this
time, our city needs an experienced legislator to represent the interests and concerns of the residents.
Gayle has a proven record to advocate and respond to the people. Although not currently in office, she
consistently supports the community by serving as an advocate and advisor... Her dedication to this city remains steadfast and unwavering.”
Lisa Mitchelson Parker, also District Leader of Central 15, added: “The Central Ward needs an experienced legislator, a responsive councilperson, and a candidate who has demonstrated making residents her first priority. Newark needs change in our governing body—Gayle is the leadership that can make a difference.”
Former South Ward Councilman Oscar S. James II concluded: “Gayle Chaneyfield Jenkins has always
been a champion for Newark residents. Her proven ability to deliver results and her deep connection to the community make her uniquely qualified to represent the Central Ward at this critical time.”
