Collision in Financial Institutions: Danielsen Objects to McKeon’s Horizon Timing

Governor Phil Murphy formally entered the Legislative District 17 race in support of Assemblymen Joe Egan and Joe Danielsen, a pair of incumbent Democrats.

Assemblyman Joe Danielsen (D-17) this morning interrupted Assemblyman John McKeon (D-27) to complain about process as the chairman of the Assembly Financial Institutions and Insurance Committee discussed 11th hour amendments to a controversial Horizon restructuring bill.

Kicking off a hearing, McKeon attempted to brief the rest of the committee on some amendments, when Danielsen abruptly asked if the chair had distributed copies of the amendments.

McKeon hadn’t, though he said he should have them into the hands of committee members by Friday, for a weekend review and a scheduled Monday committee vote.

Danielsen was not happy about it.

“The timing is really painful here,” said the Franklin Twp.-based assemblyman.

Assemblyman Chris DePhillips (R-40) likewise expressed skepticism about transparency and the Horizon bill.

“My answer is we have been working on this for a year and a half,” McKeon said.

Danielsen kept on him.

“I’m just really concerned with this schedule,” said the lawmaker. “The bill has had a year and a half and I’ve had two weeks. For anyone to understand this bill… and this is a weekend right before the holidays.”

McKeon said Friday was the best he could do.

“If Friday isn’t good enough for you…”

“I just want to do my job,” Danielsen said.

But the chairman underscored that he will have the amendments on Friday.

Hurriedly presented without accompanying copies, the amendments – such as they were – met a similarly uninspired committee at-large.

Assemblyman Gary Schaer (D-36) quizzed a Horizon rep. about an imminent (March) report concerning the company’s valuation.

Allen Karp said he didn’t know.
