Concerned about Expungement Piece of Marijuana Legalization Legislation, Baraka to Testify in Trenton

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka will appear at the Statehouse today to express his concerns about the expungement piece of marijuana legalization.

Baraka contends that no amount of marijuana possession should be held against someone. That includes the cases of those arrested and incarcerated for dealing pot.

Provided it is a non-violent conviction, the record should be expunged. Lawmakers need to refine the language to make expungement a more clearly defined process, which eliminates bureaucratic entanglements, Baraka maintains.

The mayor will appear ahead of a scheduled sit-down by other New Jersey urban mayors with the staff of Governor Phil Murphy. The mayors are likewise concerned about the specifics of expungement.
