Confident Callaway of the Referendum Backers: ‘They Won’t Win a Ward’

Craig Callaway

As of Saturday the ward breakdown of votes in the Atlantic City referendum election tallied roughly as follows:

Ward 6: 1,060

Ward 5: 519

Ward 4: 768

Ward 3: 939

Ward 2: 773

Ward 1: 924

Craig Callaway, the lead operative working against the referendum, acknowledged that the “yes” forces will receive their biggest boosts of support in wards one and six – two of the highest performing wards to this point of the rolling VBM (vote-by-mail) election with a deadline tomorrow.

But the Democratic Party minder said he doesn’t even think his rivals will win Ward Six; in fact he sees them getting buried there.

“I’ll be generous and give [‘Yes’ vote champion] Bob McDevitt 400 votes in the sixth,” Callaway said. “Look, that used to be a predominantly white ward. Times have changed. But Councilman Jesse Kurtz over there – he’s against it. And they just voted him back into office. It’s not happening.

“In fact, I’ll go ahead and say it,” Callaway added. “They won’t win a ward.”

Having said that, he acknowledged that his rival’s likening him to Leon Lett was “a good one.”
