Currie Has Murphy’s Support to Continue as State Democratic Party Chairman
First elected chairman in 2013, Democratic State Committee Chairman John Currie is expected to have the support of the committee this week for another six months in office.
It helps him to have gotten behind Phil Murphy for Governor early.
Currie went to the Democratic nominee to kiss the ring and receive the candidate’s blessing, and Murphy apparently acted like that wasn’t necessary and told him Currie that he has his support. In a symbolic gesture, Brendan Gill, Murphy’s campaign strategist, will act as master of ceremonies at Thursday night’s Democratic convention at the Hilton in East Brunswick.
InsiderNJ reported last month that at the end of his service Currie intends to run for Passaic County clerk, and sources confirm that desire by the veteran party leader. Currie seeks to supplant sitting Clerk Kristin Corrado, who is running for state senator in the 40th District.
Currie’s vice chair, Lizette Delgado-Polanco, will also shoulder another six months in her current position.
Possible successors to Currie at the end of his six-month tack-on include Middesex County Democratic Chairman Kevin McCabe, Bergen Democratic Committee Chairman Lou Stellato, and Delgado-Polanco.
