Sarri Singer, daughter of state Senator Robert Singer (R-30) of Ocean County, is celebrating 20 years of surviving a bus bombing in Israel and the care and support she received at Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem.

Since the attack, she has made it her mission to speak out against terror and, through Strength to Strength, the foundation she founded in 2012, provide long-term psychological care to other terror victims.

Singer’s life was changed forever when, in 2003, she boarded a Jerusalem city bus on which a terrorist was also traveling. When he ignited his bomb, 22 pounds of explosives killed 17 men and women. Singer recalls the sound of the bus crashing and burning, the sight of the victims bleeding — and the passerby who helped her escape.

She also remembers the women from Hadassah, The Women’s Zionist Organization of America, which is a major supporter of the hospital, who happened to be visiting at the time, who approached her when she arrived, asking where on her phone her parents’ numbers were stored.

The Hadassah women stayed by Singer’s side as she had shrapnel wounds in her mouth, neck and shoulders and her fractured clavicle were repaired. She remained in the hospital for 12 days.

Said Singer, “The love I felt in the hospital and from the women of Hadassah over so many years helped me return to normal life.”
