Democrat Malinowski the Projected Victor over Incumbent Republican Lance

Powered by anti-Trump attitude, Democratic challenger Tom Malinowski tonight appears to have beaten incumbent U.S. Rep. Leonard Lance (R-7) in the 7th Congressional District.

The GOP also lost two freeholder seats in Somerset.

Somerset County Democratic Committee Chair Peg Schaffer’s candidates Shanel Robinson (running for the second time in as many years) and Sarah Sooy beat incumbent Republican freeholders Pat Scaglione and Mark Caliguire.

Republicans now hold a 3-2 advantage on the board.

There are still 20,000 vote by mails to be counted, but Republican sources doubt they will turn the election in their favor, given the pro Malinowski and pro Democratic anti-Trump trends in the district this season.

The apparent winner of the contest ran a charged-up, potent GOTV operation against Lance to complement a well-funded and sustained air war, arguing that the incumbent Republican did not adequately stand up to the policies of President Donald J. Trump.
