Democrat Sherrill Defeats Republican Webber for the CD-11 Seat

Retired Navy helicopter pilot Mikie Sherrill tonight beat Assemblyman Jay Webber (R-26) 56-43% for the 11th Congressional District seat.

A Democrat and arguably the lone transcendent candidate in this political season, Sherrill will succeed retiring Republican U.S. Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-11) in the longtime Republican district.

In his concession speech, Webber blamed the money disparity in the race: at least $8 million to $2 million. “I have been humbled by the opportunity to put forward our values in the political arena,” said the Republican candidate. “We know and the rest of the world knows that we have fought the good fight.”

In the closing days of the campaign, Webber aligned himself more publicly with President Donald J. Trump, who tweeted an endorsement of the Republican congressional candidate and fundraised for him.

Riding a wave of anti-Trump sentiment on key issues, including the Gateway Tunnel, state and local property tax deduction eliminations, and women’s issues, Sherrill portrayed herself as the moderate in the race, similar to the retiring Frelinghuysen.

  1. I guess I have to say “Congratulations” Mikie Sherrill. You may be a Pelosi-liberal who never even had her husband’s permission to run for Congress in #NJ11, I may have been our glorious President, Donald J. Trump’s choice, but you proved to be a formidable opponent. You may not have see the last of me.
