Dems Freeholder Ticket Energized in Face of Daunting Cape May Task

Cape May County Democratic Committee Chairman Sciarra.

He’s a businessman, who actually runs a business, in and of itself a mini conundrum, which makes him a bit of an anomaly in New Jersey politics, especially for a Democrat.

No wonder he’s a former Republican.

Brendan Sciarra, proud proprietor of the Mudhen Brewing Company in Wildwood, said he’s running through the tape on the last Saturday before Tuesday’s election in his home county of Cape May.

“It’s looking good,” Sciarra told InsiderNJ. “We’re having fun, hitting it hard and leaving it all out there. I think there’s real energy on the Democratic side.”

It’s a heavy lift.

In Cape May, Republicans outnumber Democrats 28,993 to 17,479. Chip in 23,278 GOP-leaning unaffiliated voters and it all adds up to one thing: a Republican Freeholder Board.

But “They’re looking for a bipartisan freeholder board,” Sciarra said. “Hopefully we’ll give it to them.”

Sciarra – chair of the county Democratic Party – is up against the added complication of U.S. Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-2) on the ballot. But President Donald J. Trump’s presence on the ballot creates another dynamic that Sciarra hopes he can use to his advantage.

That said, he’s focused on the countywide contest.

“It’s been a 5-0 Republican board since Jeff’s been in there, and they’re fighting among themselves, which lets you know it’s not paradise in there,” said the freeholder candidate, who’s running with attorney Liz Casey. “People are looking for common sense voices who listen to the people and watch their spending, which is what we’re running on.

“There’s a lot of energy for us in Cape May,” added Sciarra, whose beach bum brew pub serves as the focal fun point for a lot of area revelry, both in masked and unmasked times.

The numbers:

Cape May County 10/30/20 Turnout
Democrats 13,236 71%
Republicans 21,279 68%
Unaffiliated 10,984 45%
Total 45,753
