Diaz Endorses Phil Murphy for Governor

The only Latina mayor in the state of New Jersey today formally endorsed Phil Murphy for governor a day ahead of the Middlesex County Democratic Convention, which Murphy is expected to handily  win.

“I am proud to give my support to Phil Murphy and will do all I can to see that he is the governor to lead our state forward after the disastrous years of Chris Christie,” said Perth Amboy Mayor Wilda Diaz. “His focus on making our economy work for all residents and making our cities real engines of growth is exciting. And his willingness to stand up to President Trump to protect our immigrant communities and our Dreamers is assuring.”

Perth Amboy is in the 19th District, home to Assemblyman John Wisniewski (D-Sayreville), who will not participate in tomorrow’s screening for governor. Perth Amboy Democrats have put up their own candidate – community leader Yvonne Lopez – for the assembly to replace the retiring Wisniewski.

“When I became mayor, I was the outsider who wasn’t part of the failed machine politics. And, as mayor, I’ve stayed true to serving my constituents. Phil’s campaign mirrors that ideal, and I know his administration will similarly put the people of New Jersey first,” said Diaz.

Murphy lapped up the endorsement.

“I am honored and humbled to have earned Mayor Diaz’s support, and welcome her strong voice on behalf of Perth Amboy to our team,” said the Democratic candidate for governor, the front-runner his party’s nomination. “Under her leadership Perth Amboy is a city on the rise, and, as governor, I look forward to partnering with her to continue that positive trajectory.”
