DiGaetano Proud to Stand with McCann Aganst Lonegan in CD5

RUTHERFORD – Bergen GOP Chairman Paul DiGaetano told InsiderNJ he likes former Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan, whom he considers a friend – but he can’t support him to run for Congress against incumbent U.S. Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-5) next year.

“I support [attorney] John McCann,” DiGaetano told Insider.

DiGaetano and Lonegan were allies in the 2009 Republican Primary for Governor. But since then, Lonegan ran for statewide office again, and then for a congressional seat in CD3.

“He’s run too many times,” said DiGaetano, as he prepared for the entrance of his gubernatorial candidate, Republican Kim Guadagno. “He’s run for Congress before and it wasn’t even in the district he’s running in now.

“I’m backing McCann,” he added, referring to a highly anticipated 2018 tilt when Gottheimer, who was also present at today’s street fair, will attempt to secure the seat he won when he beat incumbent U.S. Rep. Scott Garrett (R-5) last year.

  1. These backroom deals are so obvious and pathetic. Completely embarrassing that BCRO still has this phony in the house. I wouldn’t trust him backing anybody’s campaign because you know there was shady business but even with all of that, he couldn’t get himself on the ballot for Senate!

  2. Lost elections? The same could have been said of Mr. DiGaetano in his recent run for Senate., and yet he asked for support and expected it from his friends. This is typical of the man who lost us the Legislature. Selfish, hypocritical.
