The following is a statement issued by Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo, Jr:

“Today I learned that I tested positive for the Coronavirus. I decided to get tested after experiencing a fever for several days and have been self-quarantined since March 21^st. So far, my symptoms have been mild, and I have been feeling alright. By working remotely, I have not allowed this virus to prevent me from serving our communities and the residents of Essex County. I implore everyone to practice social distancing, wash your hands frequently, limit your movements in public and stay home. We are in the midst of a public health crisis. The prudent actions we take now will determine how severe the impacts of the Coronavirus will be later.”

DiVincenzo’s announcement comes on the same week that NJTV reported that Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura tested positive for COVID-19 and is currently in self-isolation.

In a video conference with NJTV’s Michael Hill, the Sheriff – at times emotional – said that on Sunday morning he was notified of his positive test result.

“I want to be out there with my people”, he said, adding that ‘hopefully I’ll be out there soon.”

‘We’re coming in contact with a situation where everyone is hiding, they expect us to show up , and thank God, we’re doing that’, said Fontoura.

The statewide COVID-19 case count is 22,255 as of Wednesday afternoon, with 355 fatalities total.
