Election Day Trouble in Sacco City

North Bergen Mayor Nick Sacco

North Bergen Mayor (and state Senator) Nick Sacco is frustrated on behalf of his voting residents, he told InsiderNJ this afternoon.

“The state, whatever system they’re using, isn’t working,” Sacco complained.

Voters in at least two residential polling sites went downstairs to vote and found officials had no record of them in their books.

The voters did, however, pop up in the books of officials in other locales.

They were used to voting there on site, though, so it’s an Election Day snafu in North Bergen, Sacco said.

“You work hard to get the vote out – and then this – two districts with the wrong addresses,” said the North Hudson County power broker.

The mayor has no doubt about a victory for Governor Phil Murphy, but he griped about state level-incompetence.

There’s a local dynamic there.

As always, Sacco plays a mostly friendly game of GOTV vote totaling with his North Hudson rival, state Senator (and Union City Mayor) Brian P. Stack.

It’s not Murphy.

It’s about who can generate more votes for Murphy.

Stack did a rally for the governor last night.

Sacco wants to make sure the 33rd District doesn’t look depressed alongside the irrepressible Stack.

As reported earlier, Stack had his own troubles with Murphy in the lead up to his pre-Election Day event for the governor.

It’s almost as though someone in South Jersey mischievously told the two of them to experience separate versions of Murphy-level incompetence – enough to nurse some anger when everyone gets together again in the caucus on the other side of the election.

But Sacco said no one should attribute a Machiavellian motive.

It’s just – apparently – real – not concocted – incompetence.

He wants his voters to be able to vote, he insisted, and on a cold day they shouldn’t have to schlep somewhere else.

“People go downstairs and they can’t vote because there’s something wrong,” said Sacco.

He estimates the displacement of 150 voters.
