Election Day Turnout Heavy in Northwest Philly: ‘It’s been Crazy’

PHILADELPHIA – Up in the West Ward in this leafy, progressive section of the city, voter turnout impressed even the old school committee people at Summit Presbyterian Church, the longtime voting hub here.

Committeewoman Patricia Bryant said they showed up to work the polling station at 6 in the morning and didn’t see anyone ahead of the 7 a.m. opening.

By 6:10 a.m., they saw a line wrapped around the church.

This is heavy Harris country, according to the locals.

“They came out this morning and there was a long line,” the committeewoman told InsiderNJ. “Heavy turnout. It’s a beautiful neighborhood here, Chestnut Hill and Mount Airy. Everybody gets along with one another.

Poll worker Maria Veneziano said her district hit over 50% already on Election Day.

“Definitely, with the mail-ins,” she said. “We’re usually one of [the city’s] highest percentage turnout areas. We have over 831 voters in this division, which is West Mount Airy, 21-1. We’re well into the 500’s in just the first couple of hours. It’s been crazy. I wish you could have seen it this morning.”

A car pulled up outside.

“Getting my mom to vote,” a woman told InsiderNJ as she guided an older lady into the church, who greeted other voters with a sense of joy.
