FBI Investigating Vote Suppressing Robocall in Atlantic County

The federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is investigating an Election Day robocall that went out this morning telling voters that the polls are closed and there is no in-person voting in Atlantic County.

This is the heart of Congressional District 2, scene of the most-watched Congressional contest in the state, where Democratic voters were mobilizing at zero hour to drive urban turnout for their candidate, Amy Kennedy.

“The FBI is investigating a frivolous robocall; anybody who is giving misleading information should be prosecuted,” said Atlantic County Democratic Committee Chairman Mike Suleiman.

“Voter suppression is what the Democrats cry about when they’re losing,” said Atlantic County Republican Committee Chairman Keith Davis. “Before rushing to judgment, let the authorities conduct their investigation so we know the facts.”

A source told InsiderNJ that the FBI is focusing attention on the Atlantic County Board of Elections Office as part of collecting information about its investigation.

This is a developing story, with national connective tissue.

Voter suppression targeting urban communities is part of the cynical story of this election cycle, featuring President Donald J. Trump fighting to retain his seat at the top of the Republican top-of-the-ticket.

This from NJ Spotlight earlier this week, referring to operative Craig Callaway, who is on the payroll of incumbent U.S. Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-2), a diehard Trump backer:

“Callaway’s brand of vote hustling has generated widespread contempt from South Jersey’s Black community, and other critics, who say he’s perfected a voter suppression regime that could impact this tight congressional race. Top Democrats say the Callaway controversy reflects broader anxiety in the party that other pockets of minority voters in New Jersey may be targeted this year by similar tactics, or even outright intimidation. Voters are already awash in misinformation, and many are confused about voting in the state’s first almost all-mail general election.”

Van Drew Campaign Manager Ron Filan offered the following:

“If there’s a Jersey Devil sighting tonight are we going to blame that on Craig Callaway too?”
