Mayor Steven Fulop officially informed Jersey City residents today that he will not run for re-election in 2025. Last night he said he will finish his current term with the same energy and focus on the continued transformation of Jersey City that he has spearheaded for the past decade.

First elected to the City Council in 2005 as a political outsider, Fulop was then elected as Mayor in 2013 once again running against the Hudson County political establishment. He was re-elected as Mayor in 2017 by the largest plurality in the history of Jersey City with 78%, and in 2021 he became the first Mayor to win a third full term since the current form of government was established.

“I first ran for elected office in Jersey City when I came back from serving abroad in the Marine Corps because I believed that I had something different to offer both as a leader and as a public servant, and I could not be more proud of the progress that our community has made since then,” said Fulop. “Running for office outside the political establishment and standing up to powerful interests to fight for Jersey City’s future has been both incredibly challenging and rewarding. Having the chance to do that while getting married to my wife Jaclyn and raising our family here in the city we love has meant more to me than I ever could have imagined. The forward momentum happening in Jersey City is undeniable, and while there is much more work to be done I feel confident that new leaders can build on the foundation we have built while charting their own unique path forward.”

Among the major steps in Jersey City’s positive transformation, according to the mayor:

• 7 out of 10 years with no municipal tax increase, eliminating previous tax abatement policies and stopping fiscal mismanagement
• Leading the state in affordable housing production and moving forward on Bayfront, Whitlock, Hudson Exchange and many other projects
• Leading the state in economic development
• Revitalizing Journal Square and making it the heart of the city once again with soon to be open Centre Pompidou x Jersey City museum, renovating the landmark Loews Theater into a first class performing arts venue and building thousands of new housing units
• Embracing forward-looking transportation policy like the successful Vision Zero initiative to stop pedestrian deaths on city streets, Bike Master Plan and innovative micro-transit network
• Expansion of open space including completion of Berry Lane Park, Newark Avenue Pedestrian Plaza, Reservoir 3 and dozens of park renovations
• Investment in vital infrastructure including new schools, improved sewers to minimize flooding, new homeless shelter, new municipal complex on MLK Boulevard, new senior centers, historic investment in libraries and more
• Keeping Jersey City safe by hiring more police officers who are representative of the community, investing in technology and training and prioritizing community engagement

“I will continue to focus with the same energy on the projects and initiatives that we started. I love Jersey City and the city’s future is bright,” Fulop concluded.

Mayor Fulop’s current term runs until January 2026.
