Fulop Tweets ‘Big Waste of Time When These Big Corporations Think They’ll Get Different Rules’
Following his declaration of a state of emergency and executive order closing a wide swath of businesses, Jersey City Mayor Fulop tweeted in response to a complaint that Newport Center was refusing to close in compliance with the EO.
‘We had a very “direct” conversation w/them about 10 minutes ago + I think they understand their choices now. They indicated to us they have decided that closing is a good idea now. Truthfully, It’s a big waste of time when these big corporations think they’ll get different rules’, the Mayor tweeted.

The mall’s website, as of this afternoon, says that they have ‘temporarily modified our business hours’ from 11am-7pm during the week and Saturday, and 12pm-6pm on Sunday, starting today.
According to the Mayor’s tweet, the mall apparently will close.
The mall subsequently announces its closure on its website: ‘In compliance with Governor Murphy’s Executive Order 104, dated March 16, 2020, and City of Jersey City Executive Order 2020-003, all non-essential businesses at Newport Centre are required to remain closed until further notice. Drug stores and other health service businesses may remain open between the hours of 11am and 7pm. Food service businesses may remain open for take-out and delivery business only, if approved by the City of Jersey City, New Jersey.’
On Tuesday afternoon during his daily coronavirus briefing update, Governor Murphy announced that all indoor malls would be closed.
