Gopal Bucks Sweeney on Shore Rentals Tax

Elected last year, state Senator Vin Gopal (D-11) of Monmouth County said he can’t back a shore rentals tax, proposed this afternoon by his ally, state Senate President Steve Sweeney (D-3).

“I’m opposed to a shore rental tax,” Gopal told InsiderNJ. “We need to turn this conversation into things we can cut. All I see are a lot of new taxes.”

Would he back the millionaire’s tax that Sweeney opposes?

“I’m open to all types of compromises, I do understand that the corporations received a huge windfall from the Trump plan,” the senator added. “On this piece – the shore rental tax – I can’t support that. That would just be devastating.”

Sweeney this afternoon made the case for the beach rentals tax.

“We’re the only state that doesn’t do it,” he argued. “All the states from Florida to Maine do this.”

For Gopal, the argument wasn’t good enough.
