In New Ad, Altman Goes After Kean for His ‘Dangerous Anti-Abortion Views’

This morning, Sue Altman released a new ad in the tightly contested race for New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District.

In the ad, NJ-07 resident Erica T. of Mountainside lays bare Republican Congressman Tom Kean, Jr.’s “dangerous anti-abortion views” – positions that are wildly out of step with the values of his constituents.

“Kean is such an extremist, he’s refused to protect IVF,” Erica says. “And he backs those who want a national abortion ban.”

Kean, Jr. might try to run away from his extreme anti-abortion views, but his 23-year political career details a sprawling record of support for stripping away the reproductive rights and fundamental freedoms of women in New Jersey and nationwide:

  • In his 2022 congressional race, Kean, Jr. created a secret website brandishing his right-wing credentials on abortion and other issues, calling New Jersey’s law protecting the right to abortion “egregious.”

  • In 2023, Kean, Jr. voted for a bill that would punish doctors with criminal penalties for providing abortion care.

  • Kean, Jr. voted four times against considering the Women’s Health Protection Act, a bill that would codify Roe v. Wade into federal law.

  • Kean, Jr. voted for appropriations funding for the Department of Veterans Affairs that prohibited the use of funds for abortion services, and voted twice for amendments to NDAA bills that would ban the use of Department of Defense funds for abortion services – depriving service members of access to reproductive healthcare while serving.

  • In 2022, as the Supreme Court was preparing to overturn Roe, Kean, Jr. voted against enshrining Roe v. Wade into the New Jersey state constitution.

  • Kean, Jr. has supported and campaigned with anti-abortion House Speaker Mike Johnson, who likened abortion to the “Holocaust”; co-sponsored the “Life at Conception Act” that would ban abortion and threaten IVF; and supported Louisiana’s extreme abortion ban that has no exceptions for rape or incest.

  • Kean, Jr. has an “A” rating from the Susan B. Anthony List, an organization that supports anti-abortion candidates and seeks to “end abortion.”

“Kean is wrong, and dangerous for New Jersey,” Erica concludes.

Defending our reproductive rights and fundamental freedoms, lowering costs for working families, keeping our communities safe, and fighting corruption on both sides of the aisle will be Sue’s top priorities as she looks to fight for the people of NJ-07 in Washington.

“Erica”
Rob West, Altman for Congress Campaign Manager said:

“If Tom Kean, Jr. didn’t want to be known as an anti-abortion extremist, then he shouldn’t have voted like one. The people of NJ-07 overwhelmingly believe in reproductive freedom, and they don’t appreciate their supposed representative working hand-in-hand with the most extreme flank of his party to gut their fundamental right to make their own medical decisions. Nobody wants Tom Kean, Jr. or extreme politicians in Washington playing doctor, and that will be made crystal clear on Election Day.”
