New Jersey, like states around the country, is undergoing the redistricting process to reapportion congressional and legislative districts based on the United States 2020 Census data. The Eagleton Institute of Politics is providing reporters, academics, students, and the general public with a resource and primer on the redistricting process.
Eagleton Visiting Associate Ingrid Reed took an in depth look at the history of redrawing electoral district lines every ten years in New Jersey and the United States.
During her presentation, Reed explores:
The basis for representation and redistricting in the U.S. Constitution
New Jersey history regarding the redistricting process
The New Jersey Constitution
What it means to be a “reform state”
How legislative and congressional redistricting is done each by a unique commission with different membership and different rules.
