June 12th: Key Runoff Elections in Trenton and Newark, and Contested County Party Reorganization Meetings

Welcome to Election Day and Reorganization Day in New Jersey.

Voters in Trenton will size up their two choices for mayor in a runoff election: Assemblyman Reed Gusciora (1,833 votes or 20.76 percent of the vote in the May 8th election) and former Pentagon security expert Paul Perez (2,536 votes or 28.73 percent). They will also pick an East Ward Councilperson between Joseph A. Harrison (448, 28.64%) and Taiwanda Terry-Wilson (493, 31.52%); a North Ward Councilperson between incumbent Marge Caldwell-Wilson (871, 46.63%) and challenger Algernon Ward, Jr. (630, 33.73%); a South Ward Councilperson between Damian Malave (400, 30.79%) and incumbent George Muscal (604, 46.50%); and a West Ward Councilperson between Robin Vaughn (1,277, 38.69%) and incumbent  Zachary Chester (867, 26.26%).

In Newark, voters will choose their council candidates in three wards: the East, West and Central.

In the West, Baraka Team member Councilman Joseph McCallum, Jr. (1,283 votes or 30.81 percent in the May 8th election), will face challenger Mecca Keyes (1,172 votes, or 28.15 percent). In the Central, vying for a vacancy created with the retirement of Gayle Chaneyfield-Jenkins, Baraka Team member LaMonica McIver (1,811 votes or 40.9 percent), faces Shawn McCray (748 votes, or 16.89 percent). And in the East, Baraka Team member Councilman Augusto Amador (1,524 votes or 42.97 percent) will go up against former Police Chief/Director Anthony Campos (1,255 votes, or 35.38 percent).

Then there are several key reorganization contests today.

Among them:

In Hudson County, Union City Mayor/Senator Brian P. Stack (D-33) will go up against Jersey City School Board Member Amy DeGise this evening at Kearny High School in a contest to succeed Vincent Prieto as chair of the Hudson County Democratic Organization (HCDO).

In Morris County, in a fight to lead the Morris County Republican Party, Ronald DeFillippis of Roxbury will face Robert Zwigard of East Hanover to replace interim chair Patti Page.

In Atlantic County, incumbent Democratic Committee Chair Mike Suleiman will face challenger Gail Merlino Biel.

Also, it is worth noting that former Passaic County Republican Committee Chairman Peter Murphy has the votes to succeed Chairman John Traier for the GOP chairmanship in Passaic.
