Kerry’s Senator Lautenberg Anecdote in ‘Every Day is Extra’
In his new book, Every Day is Extra, former U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry relates a funny incident from his time in the U.S. Senate.
The anecdote involves his colleague, the late U.S. Senator from New Jersey Frank Lautenberg.
Kerry notes that after one long and late night in the Senate, Mr. Lautenberg, described by Kerry as a “self-made millionaire,” arranged for a private plane for Kerry, and former Senators Ted Kennedy and Claiborne Pell.
“There was no discussion of sharing the costs,” Kerry wrote. “Everyone thought Frank was being very generous.”
But the next week, the senators were back on the floor when they each received official-looking envelopes. Inside they discovered exorbitant bills for the flight.
Mr. Pell went bonkers, according to Kerry, and angrily confronted Mr. Lautenberg.
The latter said he didn’t know what his fellow senator was talking about.
Then they all found out that Senator Kennedy had commandeered several sheets of Senator Lautenberg’s stationary and sent them all false bills.
