Council President Writes U.S. Attorney Concerning Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop

Jersey City Council President Rolando Lavarro wants a special election for the Board of Education seat vacated by Matt Shapiro last month. Lavarro cites a legal opinion by the Jersey City Department of Law, which states that the vacated seat should be filled after this year’s November election.

Jersey City Council President Rolando Lavarro sent a letter to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the aftermath of a Bloomberg story concerning Mayor Steve Fulop.

Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione, a spokesperson for the mayor, had this to say in response:

“While Mayor Fulop nor his wife have ever been accused of any wrong doing EVER, it is sad that Rolando would use someone’s family as a tool to score political points. The Bloomberg article clearly states the mayor recused himself from any potential conflicts over the years. Furthermore, as the Bloomberg article detailed, the mayor’s wife’s business predates their marriage, neither the mayor nor his family have ever received special treatment, and after 3 months of investigative journalism there isn’t one document to suggest otherwise. The article had no information to suggest anything other than the mayor acting properly. Rolando has reached a new low in attacking someone’s family to score political points.”
