LD11 Flashpoint: Beck Campaign Beehived, Tammy Murphy Diner Hops with Gopal
On paper the biggest legislative battleground in the state, state Senator Jen Beck (R-11) versus Democratic challenger Vin Gopal spent the weekend in full-fledged campaign mode, as the latter welcomed a civil rights icon to the contest.
One-hundred Colombia University Young Democrats joined the Gopal Campaign on the trail for a final GOTV push, while the legendary U.S. Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) did a robocall for Gopal.
In the meantime, Beck’s Campaign was “a beehive of activity,” according to one GOP source.
“The mistake of 2015 for the R’s here was letting the suburbs sleep through the election,” said the source. “It won’t happen again.”
Tammy Murphy, wife of Democratic gubernatorial candidate Phil Murphy, apparently believed otherwise. She campaigned in a diner with Gopal and his running mates, Assemblywoman Joann Downey (D-11) and Assemblyman Eric Houghtaling (D-11).
Most insiders in both parties say the race is too close too call with the edge to Beck.
As for Lewis, it represents the third time going back to 2012 the Civil Rights warrior has involved himself in a closely contested New Jersey election. Lewis issued a statement on behalf of U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-9) in the 2012 CD9 Democratic Primary, and campaigned in Hackensack just last year for U.S. Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-5).
