Memo to Joe Biden: “Big Gretch” is Your IDEAL Veep Choice!

Whitmer

At the end of March, I authored an InsiderNJ column in which I strongly advocated that Democratic presidential nominee apparent Joe Biden select Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer as his running mate.

I based my assertion on one governmental factor (the need for a former governor to act as a chief operating officer for a presidential chief executive officer) and one political consideration (the preference for a woman who could carry a vital swing state; e.g.: Whitmer in Michigan.)

Yet now another political consideration of an enormously compelling nature has arisen for a Biden selection of Whitmer.  She is now celebrated in the Michigan African-American community, due to her strong and unwavering opposition to the illegal and racist demonstrations against her stay-at-home executive order.

The African-American community in Michigan, as in other states has been disproportionately negatively impacted by the Coronavirus.  Whitmer’s policies emphasizing total protection of public health before reopening the Michigan economy are overwhelmingly popular among Michigan African-Americans.  She is affectionately known among Detroit blacks as the “Big Gretch”  https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/detroit/2020/05/01/gretchen-whitmer-big-gretch-detroit-michigan/3066950001/?utm_source=AMP&utm_medium=UpNext

And now, Gretchen Whitmer has earned the ultimate tribute from a prominent Detroit rapper. GmacCash, the self-proclaimed “King of Parody Rap,” has composed a new song, “Big Gretch,” which he released this past Saturday.  The song praises Gov. Whitmer’s response to COVID-19 and defends her against her critics and protesters of her policies.  Listen to the song!

As the song spreads in popularity throughout the National African-American community, Gretchen Whitmer will become the most popular white woman politician in Black America.   She will have real Get-Out-The-Vote (GOTV) potential for Joe Biden in the African-American community.  And the election of 2020 is, above all, a GOTV election.

There is no other prospect for the Democratic vice presidential nomination that has Gretchen Whitmer’s potential to enhance the Biden presidential candidacy.   Do not wait, Joe.  Select Gretchen Whitmer as your running mate NOW.

Alan J. Steinberg served as Regional Administrator of Region 2 EPA during the administration of former President George W. Bush and as executive director of the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission.

  1. I really wish Republicans would stop telling Democrats what to do, how to campaign or whom to choose as prospective candidates.

Alan Steinberg is a Republican who worked in the administration of former Republican President George W. Bush, the man whose lies got us into Iraq, whose arrogance allowed al Qaeda to destroy the World Trade Center, and whose stupidity resulted in the 2008 financial crisis & TARP. For a more detailed review of the Bush record, see David Sirota’s recent screed on the subject.

Whether our Democratic presidential nominee selects the daughter of a Michigan Blue Cross Blue Shield executive or someone like Stacy Abrams, the former Georgia House of Representatives minority leader who was cheated out of winning the 2018 Georgia gubernatorial election, the decision does not belong to the people who elected Republican Donald Trump and turned control of their party over to the KKK and corporate plutocrats. If Alan Steinberg wants something productive to do, he should set out to contest and reform the Republican Party.

Has he demanded that Tom Kean Jr. stop consorting with Kentucky Republicans who opposed federal aid for New Jersey residents after Hurricane Sandy? Has he demanded that the GOP oust elected officials who cater to bigotry and racism? Has he demanded a consensus around the fact that Reaganomics has been a dismal failure, because tax cuts do not result in economic stimulus or increased government revenue?

It seems Republicans have plenty to do before they start dictating to Democrats.
