Menendez to Union: ‘Two Days to Stop Trump’
Bob Menendez is not the most fiery speaker on the planet, but he did his best in Union County Sunday morning screaming to the crowd, “Two days to stop Trump.”
Sure, it’s a rallying cry, but it also symbolizes how Democrats see the midterm election.
They want to stop Trump.
Republicans like to say the Dems are not running on issues and to a certain extent, they’re right.
But they overlook, consciously or not, the fact that stopping the Trump agenda is the main issue for those on the left. And it is why they marched earlier this year to support women’s rights and gun control. And it is why they say – as they did Sunday at a rally at the Suburban Golf Club – that Trump is “defiling” the presidency.
Cory Booker, who has no rhetorical match among New Jersey Democrats, talked about how the opposition threatens democracy by trying to stop people from voting through ID laws. He meant elsewhere; there are no such laws in New Jersey.
It was a jammed-packed crowd in the country club. Parking was difficult because of the size of the crowd, but upon arrival, folks sampled a buffet brunch and had a wide choice of beverages as the bar was open for business.
Menendez and Booker spoke and moved on to another event. Some of the crowd left as well.
That was too bad, because the final speaker of the morning, congressional candidate Tom Malinowski, probably made the most salient point.
Malinowski doesn’t scream in public; in fact, he seldom raises his voice.
But he drew attention to how Republicans are ending their campaign.
They are not, he said, talking about the economy, which Malinowski acknowledged is doing well.
No, he said Republicans on the national level are running on “fear,” calling Central American migrants about a thousand miles from the southern border an invading army.
“All we hear is that these people are animals,” Malinowski said with a measure of disgust.
Menendez embodies everything we claim to despise about politics: lifelong politician, drowning in corruption charges. The man is crooked.
