The Freeholder fight unites more than it delights.

(TRENTON) – State Treasurer Elizabeth Maher Muoio announced that Acting Director Corey Amon was sworn in this morning as the permanent Director of the Department of the Treasury’s Division of Investment (DOI).

Amon had been the Acting Director since July 2018. He was appointed by Treasurer Muoio to be the permanent Director after his name was submitted as a qualified candidate by the State Investment Council (SIC).

“I’m pleased to support the SIC’s recommendation that Corey Amon assume the role of Director in a permanent capacity,” said Treasurer Muoio. “Corey’s diligent oversight of the pension fund’s day-to-day operations, his responsiveness to the concerns of pension holders, members of our office and other critical stakeholders, and his proven commitment to upholding the fiduciary standards required by the office make him a natural fit for this position.”

“I am most appreciative of the trust and support extended to me by the Treasurer, her team, and the members of the SIC,” said Amon.  “I look forward to continuing to work with the Division’s investment professionals on behalf of over 800,000 participants in the state’s pension plans.”

Prior to assuming the role of Acting Director, Amon had been Deputy Director of the DOI since 2014. Before joining the DOI, Amon was Assistant Treasurer for a Fortune 500 company, serving as a fiduciary on the Investment Committee. In this role, Amon had numerous responsibilities encompassing the entire investment process, including asset allocation, manager searches, due diligence and ongoing performance evaluation, regulatory and guideline monitoring, and compliance for defined benefit and contribution plans.

Earlier in his career, Amon spent more than 16 years at Taplin, Canida & Habacht (TCH), a registered investment advisory firm and a subsidiary of BMO Global Asset Management specializing in institutional portfolio management. Amon held numerous roles at TCH, including Portfolio Manager and Director of Research. In that capacity, Amon was part of the portfolio management team responsible for public pension fund portfolios, including numerous state funds.

Amon has been a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) since 1998 and holds a bachelor’s degree in economics and finance from Barry University. Amon resides in Pennington, NJ with his wife and four children.

The Division of Investment, under the supervision of the State Investment Council, is one of the largest pension fund managers in the United States and is responsible for the management of the seven pension funds that comprise the NJ Pension Fund and the NJ Cash Management Fund. The NJ Pension Fund, which was valued at $78 billion at the end of Fiscal Year 2018, supports the retirement plans of approximately 813,180 active and retired employees.
