Murphy Announces Candidacy for Congress in New Jersey’s Third Congressional District
Following the announcement that Congressman Andy Kim would seek the position of United States Senator, State Assemblywoman Carol Murphy announced her consideration of a congressional run for the open seat in New Jersey’s Third Congressional District. Today, via a video announcement Carol Murphy officially launched her candidacy announcing her bid to become the first woman in South Jersey history to serve in the United States House of Representatives.
With the State of New Jersey one of only two states to conduct legislative elections during non-federal election years, Carol Murphy elaborated on the timing of her early announcement while running for her fourth term:
“Today’s announcement comes with a realization that the stakes are extremely high on a multitude of fronts. Just less than a month remains in the state legislative elections and I’m highly focused on Democratic success in several competitive districts, but I knew an announcement of my congressional candidacy also needed to happen as this seat is critical to gain a Democratic house majority. We have been fortunate to have Congressman Kim representing us, and like him, I knew that timing was not ideal, but the stakes have never been higher. And, as a woman I know in the arena of politics and government, if I did not clearly state my intentions, there certainly would be others suggesting that I wait my turn. That was no going to happen as I know running to be the first ever woman to serve in the United States House of Representatives from South Jersey the glass ceiling doesn’t wait to be shattered.”
