Murphy Sides with Speaker Prieto in Horizon Street Fight

In the middle of a statewide brawl over Horizon reserve funds, Democratic gubernatorial nominee Phil Murphy in a statement this evening expressed his resistance to Governor Chris Christie’s plan.

His full statement:

“I welcome all efforts to have a robust and transparent conversation about how we ensure all New Jerseyans have access to affordable, high-quality health care.

“As I have said previously, I have serious concerns with the Governor’s proposal to raid Horizon’s surplus at a time when Republicans in Washington are threatening to gut the ACA. The Governor is now once again holding hostage funding for public education and critical programs in order to score a cheap political victory. While Democrats in the Legislature have worked hard to find compromise, we simply need more time to give this policy a proper vetting.

“The people of New Jersey deserve a full and transparent discussion of all options to expand health care to all nine-million residents of our state, and that is a conversation I am eager to have.”

The statement aligned Murphy with embattled Speaker Vincent Prieto (D-32) and against the longstanding tandem of Christie and powerful South Jersey boss George Norcross III.

Norcross last week attempted to round up caucus votes in support of the proposed Horizon raid, which Prieto checked with public DOA declarations. In the midst of the standoff, state Senator Joe Vitale (D-19) put forward a bill on Friday evening that proposes numerous changes to Horzion’s governing structure. For more on that bill, go here.
