New Jersey Democrats Commit 139 Votes to Joe Biden for President
On the second night of an historic virtual Democratic National Convention, New Jersey tonight committed 139 deleate votes to the nomination of Joe Biden, according to Governor Phil Murphy.
Patched in as the representative of the Garden State, Murphy stood on the boardwalk in Asbury Park with his wife, First Lady Tammy Murphy, Democratic State Committee Chairman John Currie and Vice Chair Peg Schaffer.
“We’ve been hit hard by COVID, but we’re coming back,” Murphy promised, just before he pledged the committments of New Jersey’s party delegates.
Of the state’s 147 delegates, 126 are pledged to the winner of the primary. Biden pulled 813,693 votes in the New Jersey Democratic Primary, compared to 140,336 for U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont.
Sanders received five votes from New Jersey.
Moments later, Biden formally recieved the party’s nomination for president.
“Thank you very, very much, from the bottom of my heart,” said Biden. “I’ll see you on Thursday.”
