The NRCC Hits Gottheimer on His Impeachment Position

The National Republican Campaign Committee (NRCC) is going after the battleground district-based U.S. Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-5).

Today, they circulated a video of someone asking the congressman for his position on impeachment.

The Democratic congressman is “reserving judgement” on the inquiry.

“As your Representative, I believe it is my utmost responsibility to both fight for my constituents and protect the Constitution. Without it, and the rule of law, our democracy cannot continue to thrive, as it has since our founding,” Gottheimer said last week.

“The serious allegations that have surfaced about communication between President Trump and the Ukrainian President put our national security at risk and merit an immediate inquiry. We must let the facts guide our work. Given the gravity of this moment, I will base my final judgment on whether impeachment is warranted on the information garnered through this inquiry, not on hearsay, social media, or conflicting news accounts. I’d urge the House Republicans to do the same.”

But the GOP found him in D.C. to press him on the matter (see video below), and criticize him for not outright opposing the impeachment inquiry, like his colleague, U.S. Rep. Jeff Van Drew (D-2).

“Josh Gottheimer’s support for Democrats’ baseless attempts to impeach President Trump will cost him his seat in 2020,” said NRCC Spokesman Michael McAdams.

Frank Pallotta, Republcian candidate for Congress in New Jersey’s Fifth District, released the following statement:
“Let’s face it: Josh has been faking it with NJ-05 voters all along. At home, he plays the bipartisan choir boy and when he goes to Washington, he becomes Nancy Pelosi’s lap dog. If Josh can’t answer a simple question about where he stands, how can you expect him to stand up for you?”
