Perth Amboy Mayor Diaz Issues Statement Following COVID-19 Exposure

The following is a letter from Perth Amboy Mayor Wilda Diaz, who has self-quarantined following exposure to COVID-19:

Dear Residents of Perth Amboy,

As the world continues to deal with stress and anxiety of the coronavirus, our community has been faced with the difficult choices of implementing very strict guidelines to ensure the health and safety of our residents. As your mayor, I have been at the forefront of this public health crisis, working with the state, county and local officials to enforce emergency measures to help mitigate the spread of this contagious virus.

Despite our collective efforts, a number of afflicted residents are being tested positive for COVID-19, including one member that I had close contact with. As such, I have been advised to self-quarantine while I continue to practice my duties as mayor of the City of Perth Amboy in a safe manner that is consistent with the recommendations made by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The County’s Department of Health will be investigating the matter to ensure everyone’s safety. As your neighbor, I promise you that I will heed the same guidelines we have asked you to follow to help reduce the spread of the virus. While I have not been tested nor shown any signs of symptoms, I will follow the directives of our experts and self-monitor for symptoms of the virus. I ask that you do the same for the sake of our community.

There’s no doubt that this public health crisis has disrupted our lives, but I am humbled to see our community come together in such a time of crisis— a reminder of the strength and unity that perseveres in Perth Amboy.

I am proud to be your mayor.

Thank you for your cooperation. My prayers are with you and your family.

The statewide COVID-19 case count is 22,255 as of Wednesday afternoon, with 355 fatalities total.
