A Place Called Harmony: Warren Dems Chair Palmieri to Oversee Open Convention
The seven CD7 towns from Warren County include a place called Harmony, which now seems far from the minds of those single-minded Democratic Primary competitors in the 7th Congressional District.
On Saturday, Warren Democrats under the leadership of Chairman Tom Palmieri will hold their convention in the local Masonic Lodge in Washington.
In Somerset, each local chair supplied a vote.
In Essex, the county party chairman supplied the vote for the one town in his county that sits in the 7th.
In Hunterdon, party members had an open convention.
In Warren, “We’re having an open convention,” Palmieri told InsiderNJ, and supplied details.
“If it was only people in the 7th it would be about 30 people, but we want to get as many people involved as we can, so we’re opening it up to the whole county,” the chairman said.
There are 98 county committee people, and Palmieri estimates an attendance of about 60 come Saturday.
So does he back among the seven candidates vying to take on U.S. Rep. Leonard Lance (R-7)?
“Historically, I’ve gone out in front of the committee and endorsed, but this year my executive committee asked me not to,” Palmieri said. “I have my perspectives but they all have strengths and weaknesses.
“My fear is with seven candidates in the race,” he added, “we can end up with the weakest candidate in the general election.”
Palmieri once ran against Lance himself, back in 1999, when Lance was an assemblyman.
“I lost,” he recalled, speaking matter-of-factly.
The convention on Saturday gets underway at 10:30 a.m.
