Police Shut Down South Plainfield Labor Day Parade

South Plainfield

SOUTH PLAINFIELD – Authorities this morning canceled a Labor Day Parade here this morning as they undertake “an active investigation” in this blue collar Middlesex County town, according to the South Plainfield Police Department.

The event was the first scheduled stop on Governor Phil Murphy’s two-stop campaign kickoff tour today.

“They’re not going to tell you anything,” said a man at the local Dunkin Donuts.

He was a former city employee, and he and another man confirmed what the police told InsiderNJ: active investigation.

“Security issue,” according to local reports.

They didn’t have any details, however.

The weather was ominous.

“It’s gotta be the weather,” a man in a pickup truck volunteered. “I mean, look at that.”

Dark clouds hung over Maple Avenue.

More later.

Now this…

NBC News reports that authorities found small explosive devices in a home near the parade route where Murphy planned to walk.
