Polling Heavily Favors Kim over Bashaw in U.S. Senate Contest

RANDOLPH – Dropping into this Morris County town Sunday morning to launch a local canvass effort, Curtis Bashaw was quite upbeat.

He said he just made the rounds at a local diner and had been well received by just about everyone. Only people at one table refused to take his literature.

Addressing supporters with leafy and colorful trees behind him, Bashaw said independents and even some Democrats will move his way because of the economy and the border.

Then again, a poll popped up over the weekend showing what most people know, but also something a bit revealing.

And the “revealing” part was not good news for Bashaw, the Republican candidate for Senate.

The poll was done by Cygnal, which Real Clear Politics describes as Republican-leaning.

No matter. The poll gave Kamala Harris a 52-40 percentage point lead in New Jersey over Donald Trump. No surprise there.

How about Bashaw?

The poll presented the following

Andy Kim – 51 percent

Bashaw – 32 percent.

Kim

Or if you incorporate “genetic” responses from undecided voters, the findings are Kim at 55 percent and Bashaw at 38.

So, a chunk of those voting for Trump will not vote for the Republican senate candidate, the poll said.

Sure, this could be an anomaly.

Then again, we have seen some right-wing groups express dismay with Bashaw’s support for abortion rights. Don’t forget that pro-lifers are a big part of the GOP base.

This poll may be an indication that some religious conservatives will vote for Trump, but not Bashaw.

Asked about the poll, Bashaw remained confident, saying things will change when his ads “go up,” which will happen this week.

He also took some solace from the fact Kim was at “only” 51 percent in one interpretation of the poll, which is just barely a majority.

Keep in mind that “positive spin” is a big part of politics.
