14th Legislative District Officials Release a Joint Statement on Trenton Water Works
TRENTON – Senator Linda R. Greenstein, Assemblyman Wayne P. DeAngelo, and Assemblywoman Tennille R. McCoy of the 14th Legislative District released the following statement in response to recent concerns about the viability of Trenton Water Works (TWW).
“For over a century, the Trenton Water Works system has provided much of the running water used daily by Mercer County residents. Currently, it serves over 220,000 individuals, primarily in Ewing, Hamilton, Hopewell, and Lawrence Townships. Since TWW is part of the city, it is managed by Trenton’s mayor and council, leaving 55 percent of its users without any say in its operations.
“After decades of ongoing operational, maintenance, and infrastructural deficiencies, Trenton Water Works has consistently failed to comply with the Safe Drinking Water Act. In 2022, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection took direct oversight of the TWW due to its inability to effectively operate and maintain the system.
"An independent third-party review recently identified Trenton Water Works as being at an 'extremely high risk of systemic failure,' a challenge that TWW cannot address on its own. We, the legislators of the 14th District, advocate for its restructuring as an independent regional public utility. This change would facilitate the modernization of its facilities and improve the professionalism of its staff and operational practices. We are prepared to develop legislation to establish this new regional utility.
"It is crucial for us to take these steps toward a long-term solution that will benefit all nearly quarter-million residents who depend on Trenton Water Works for safe, reliable drinking water at affordable rates.”
