NJ SENATE TO VOTE TODAY ON HIGHER WAGE BILL

STAFER Act will lift thousands of airport, rail & ferry workers out of poverty

Trenton—The New Jersey Senate will cast a critical vote on today that will impact thousands of privately contracted airport, rail and ferry workers.  The STAFER Act or (Safe Transportation Jobs and Fair Employment Rules Act) was approved just days ago by the Assembly.  The legislation will ensure that the hardworking men and women who work at Newark Airport, Newark Penn Station and Hoboken Station receive the same wages and benefits as publicly contracted unarmed security officers. Transportation workers play a vital role in keeping passengers and facilities safe but they don’t make enough money to make ends meet.  Most subcontracted Newark Airport workers make just $10.20 per hour—about $22,000 per year—less than the federal poverty level for a family of four.  As a result, a significant number of airport workers—the majority of whom are immigrants and people of color—are living in poverty.  The STAFER Act will help right this wrong.

The STAFER Act, sponsored by Senator Teresa Ruiz, Senate President Stephen Sweeney and Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto, has received widespread support by legislators. If it’s approved on Monday, it will head to Governor Chris Christie’s desk.
